Summary

Alex was everything, the vagueness of every poc character being depicted as ‘dark’ and nothing more-was not。 If you can spend a whole page talking about how Sage was judged for having freckled skin from enjoying the sun, you can describe the love interest a bit better than ‘dark skin’ and ‘dark hair’。 He might as well have been a shadow。

The sequels are not as good but I love this book so much and it is soooooo underrated! It has an amazing plot and Sage is an amazing main character。 At first i thought it was the typical not like other girls protagonist but as the story progressed her real personality shined through and it was overall a great read。

This book was so great!! Loved the main character, Sage… reminded me of Jude Duarte and who wouldn’t love anyone like her。 And the plot twist was insaneeeee。 I was so confused at first I had to read previous chapters just to put two and two together。

Fun read! I absolutely loved the romance! The foreshadowing for the plot twist let me figure it out before it happened but wasn’t super obvious so it was satisfying to figure it out。

When you hate a book because the love interest is blander then a damp piece of paper and you keep getting chapters on a character you think doesn’t really matter, then a plot twist you didn’t see coming solves all the problems you had with the book。 The plot twist came in so late that I had trouble getting into the book。 But I’m glad I stuck it out。

There's just so much I love about this book。 On the surface, the plot seems like what we've all seen before from fantasy YA novels: an independent heroine is living in a time of political unrest 。。。 and she meets a cute boy。 But this book has political intrigue with enough action and tension to keep me hooked。The one negative is that Sage might be a bit too perfect — she's incredibly smart, observant, and she's pretty (you can't tell me she's not since at least five boys kind of fell over themse There's just so much I love about this book。 On the surface, the plot seems like what we've all seen before from fantasy YA novels: an independent heroine is living in a time of political unrest 。。。 and she meets a cute boy。 But this book has political intrigue with enough action and tension to keep me hooked。The one negative is that Sage might be a bit too perfect — she's incredibly smart, observant, and she's pretty (you can't tell me she's not since at least five boys kind of fell over themselves over the course of the book)。 However, she's just so likable。 I think what saved her character was that Sage wasn't always right, and there's situations where she has to own up to her mistakes。 Plus, I LOVED that there wasn't a love triangle。Some of the best parts of The Traitor's Kiss are so subtle that it's a 'blink-and-you-miss-it' situation。 The addition of the political tensions as well how Sage solves problems using the information she observes (and flirts out of the people around her) make it one of the better YA fantasy novels I've read lately。 。。。more

This was not what I was expecting, and since it's a series, I can't really decide where it's going。 In saying that, I loved it。Sage Fowler is judged too unruly to be matched into marriage but instead is given the opportunity to apprentice the matchmaker and go with her in taking all the girls who can be matched。 They are escorted by a company of soldiers and are endangered because of the higher politics of the country。 Sage at first thinks the soldier she has feelings for is of royal blood, and This was not what I was expecting, and since it's a series, I can't really decide where it's going。 In saying that, I loved it。Sage Fowler is judged too unruly to be matched into marriage but instead is given the opportunity to apprentice the matchmaker and go with her in taking all the girls who can be matched。 They are escorted by a company of soldiers and are endangered because of the higher politics of the country。 Sage at first thinks the soldier she has feelings for is of royal blood, and he thinks that she might be a spy。Erin Beaty is a great writer。 She knows how to weave a tale。 The characters were well developed and had actual personalities。 I didn't see the mini twist to be honest, which I'm glad about on reflection, because it means that Erin is not going to follow the standard YA fantasy mould。 I'm not sure where the story is going since the MC defeated the bad guy by the end of the book, but I'm interested to see the further adventures。 。。。more

I finished the book and I have to say I very much disliked it。 It was painfully slow and hurt to read and not much was happening。 There was way too much politics and too many characters and not much description of the settings or the places。 While I was reading the book, I felt as if I was reading the second book though it was the first。 It was tedious and had hardly any action。 Though the story plot would have been much more interesting if the style was slightly more different and there was mor I finished the book and I have to say I very much disliked it。 It was painfully slow and hurt to read and not much was happening。 There was way too much politics and too many characters and not much description of the settings or the places。 While I was reading the book, I felt as if I was reading the second book though it was the first。 It was tedious and had hardly any action。 Though the story plot would have been much more interesting if the style was slightly more different and there was more adventure in there。 If the author had reduced the amount of politics and talking and replaced it with more tension and mystery, I would have enjoyed it much more。Now, about the characters。 My favorite character was Alex。 He was very nicely written, imaginable and calculating。 Being the son of the general he had a lot of duties and pressure riding on him。 His character was the best written of all, including his description and emotion。 When he spoke it showed his kindness towards the people he swore to protect and loved in the book and alongside that the revenge he wanted for the deaths of his friends and loved ones who had died the summer before in the horrible battle。 His character developed as the book went on and whenever his parts arrived in the book was when it always seemed to get interesting because he was always on the move。 Though Sage was supposed to be the most main character, she seemed plainly written and did not have much emotion。 Though it was very clear that she was scared of fire and had panic attacks whenever she was near fire or had to handle it, there was nothing else that she did in the book other than gather an army and act like she was going up the ranks and becoming important to her country。In the end, the people who end up together were obvious throughout the book。 The two Alex and Sage end up being together at the end after their relationship went through an uncomfortable ride throughout the entire book。 Though there are many things I would have loved to see in this book, I am glad I have at least liked one or two of the characters in there。 The world the author had created was nearly impossible to understand, names and people mixed into the lines and sentences of the book。 Though there was a map provided at the start of the book I did not expect the book to be such a bumpy ride。Did I mention it was horribly slow and I didn't understand like。。。。。。。half the words they said? Yeah。 Okay。The book was boring and I give it a 2 out of 5 stars rating。 I will not be reading the second book of the series。 。。。more

Sure, some of the girls were brats but it was because of the class system and problems within in。 I'd really encourage everyone who's debating if they should read it to do so and have an open mind while reading! 。。。more

I had to write a review just to articulate my jumbled feelings! With so many locations, ruling families, and shifting alliances, I felt lost and almost DNF, but pushed through and was mostly glad I stuck with it。 My strategy was to basically ignore mentions of any place/player that wasn't a Good Guy, the Traitor, or the People Helping the Traitor be Traitorous。Speaking of that plot hack, I had a difficult time visualizing anyone aside from Sage。 As other reviewers have pointed out, characters ar I had to write a review just to articulate my jumbled feelings! I even went to the author's website in hopes of finding some character sketches or creator-approved renderings, but no luck。 On the other hand, passages about far less interesting topics, like the cistern, were written in such detail, yet I still couldn't picture them clearly。 So I'd press on and hope for more action and dialogue in the next chapter。I did not see the twist coming; in fact, I had to go back and reread the reveal several times to make sure I was understanding the implications of it, and honestly I'm still not sure I have a handle on it。 Granted, I was reading this late into the night, which is a point in the book's favor—I had to know what happened next。While Sage is a poster child for the "Not Like Other Girls" trope, the rest of the characters kept me invested in the outcome, particularly Casseck, Charlie, and Lady Clare。 The encounters between Sage and Ash are some of my favorite moments—sweet and tantalizing (I like the long game in romance)。The final showdown didn't have the payoff I expected after such a long lead-up, and (view spoiler)[I CANNOT BELIEVE THE AUTHOR DID CHARLIE LIKE THAT (hide spoiler)], so the ending was frustrating even without an obvious cliffhanger。I'm going to take a break and read something contemporary before deciding if I'll carry on with the series。 As of now, I could go either way。 。。。more

This book。 I've never read a book as bland as this in the entire existence of my life。Not only did this book have an insurmountable amount of stereotypes, the way that the author had chosen to describe POC in this book seemed very careless which also had me wondering if the author was simply discriminating against the POC present in this book or if it's because the author couldn't seem to get any access to the internet。Right through the start she makes it abundantly clear that she really hadn't This book。 I've never read a book as bland as this in the entire existence of my life。Not only did this book have an insurmountable amount of stereotypes, the way that the author had chosen to describe POC in this book seemed very careless which also had me wondering if the author was simply discriminating against the POC present in this book or if it's because the author couldn't seem to get any access to the internet。Right through the start she makes it abundantly clear that she really hadn't given much thought to the POC present in this book。 Throughout the 350 pages, the only word that was used to describe POC was 'Dark' and 'Darker', it seemed like she lost her thesaurus while at the grocery store。Also dark skinned aggressor trope alert:"The man nodded once from inside his hood but said nothing。 Kimisar were even darker than Demorans from Aristel, and this close he almost faded into the shadows。 Swirling tattoos on his exposed forearms added to the shapeless effect。"Apart from the 'obvious' difference in complexion of the POC mentioned in this book, the only other feature that seemed prominent enough to be touched upon was their 'dark hair' and 'dark eyes'。 Another thing that infuriated me was our flat chested, skinny, and not so pretty protagonist who makes sure that we know she's 'not like other girls' from the very beginning。She love wearing breeches and running around in the wild, she's smart and stubborn and unlike other girls in the village she seems to detest getting married。"She had no desire to be hearded across the country to tennegol and practically auctioned off like a prize head of cattle。 Hannah, however, fantasized about it, as did all girls across Demora。"Not to mention there's SO MUCH girl on girl hate in this book。 I was so put off by this from the very beginning since the author seemed to make it very clear that sage, our protagonist doesn't fit in with the other 'noble ladies' and how they are constantly jealous of her because she seems to get along SO WELL with the men present in this book and not to mention this also played a huge part in her character development, as if there was any 'personality' to begin with。It was hilarious and was absolutely astonishing to see how much thought the writer had put into writing this book。OH, and I almost forgot to mention! this is supposedly a "Mulan retelling" and NEWSFLASH PEOPLE, this is just one of those fantasy books on white people written by a white author who just can't seem get over problematic tropes。I swear。 This book is nothing but a waste of time。Also I wouldn't be rating this book since it does not even deserve a star rating。 。。。more
